Unpublished writing may be commercially valuable, deeply personal or both. This page says plainly what the current Efef Writer does, what it does not do and what writers need to protect for themselves.
What happens when you write
Your manuscript stays local
Efef saves your draft in browser storage on the device you are using. Signing in identifies your account; it does not turn this launch version into a cloud backup.
Connected features are off
Cloud sync, story understanding and AI processing are not active. No manuscript text is sent to a model, payment service, marketing system or email provider.
The device-only limit matters
Work saved in one browser does not automatically appear on another device. Clearing browser data, losing the device or using private-browsing mode may make a draft unrecoverable. Export work you care about and keep that file somewhere you trust. Efef must not describe this local copy as cloud backup or end-to-end encrypted sync.
Your author rights
- You retain ownership of manuscripts, notes, worlds and uploaded assets.
- Efef does not sell, license or use your manuscript to train a model.
- You can write, read, export and delete your local work on the Free plan.
- A future paid plan will never transfer ownership of your work to Efef.
What service providers still receive
A public web service still uses providers for website hosting and account email. They may receive ordinary network and account details such as an IP address, browser request and email address. They do not need manuscript content for those jobs. Efef keeps story content out of URLs, authentication email, payment metadata, analytics, session replay and application logs.
If connected features arrive later
Efef will not silently change a local manuscript into a cloud or AI-connected project. Before any story content leaves the device, the product must explain what is sent, why, which processor receives it, how long it is retained and how to turn the feature off. That future choice is not part of this launch.
Current document status
This is the product’s plain-language launch disclosure. It is not yet a counsel-reviewed statutory Privacy Notice. Precise retention periods, the legal entity operating Efef, the complete subprocessor list and legally required regional notices remain to be completed before this page can be treated as final legal policy.
The accompanying Terms are also a founder-review draft. These labels are deliberate: Efef should not invent legal facts or disguise unfinished legal review.
